About Us

Pilgrims Rest Tours is the only registered tour operator in Pilgrims Rest specializing in the Village itself as well as the surrounding region of Mpumalanga. Included as part of the Panorama Route which includes the Blyde River Canyon and wonderful waterfalls, the Village is a must do destination.

The Historic Village of Pilgrims Rest is an important part of the History of South Africa, as the first ever gold rush in Africa occurred here in 1873. Gold and gold mining became the most important industry in South Africa, driving the economy from that time until present.

The tours offered by us explore the development of the industry, from a small Diggings through the mining era to today where a new concept in mining is emerging.

The opportunity to gold pan yourself is unique and interactive and provides fun and interest for all ages and abilities, any size group is welcome. Children under 5 years can be catered for in an above ground panning area.

The Main Road is filled with museums and icons of a by gone era and is begging to be explored.

The impact of the various wars fought in South Africa had a far - reaching effect on the Village and the surrounding areas and provide material for interesting anecdotes and tales. A memorable hour can be filled listening to some of these stories from our guides.

Alanglade by day or night is a fascinating tour and provides insight into the diversity of the community in the Hey Day of Pilgrims Rest. This Mine Managers Mansion filled with Edwardian antiques was built in 1916 as home to the Barry Family and their presence lingers on and creates an atmosphere of nostalgia.

All guides are resident in the Village, trained and registered as guides with the Mpumalanga Tourism Authority and have current first aid certificates.
